Harlingen, TX -
Nicholas DeLeon an area man and close friend of yours for more than 20 years is having a difficult time understanding your reasons against joining a cult with him.
During an impromptu driveway basketball game on Tuesday evening, DeLeon confided in you that he has chosen to join a local religious cult and expressed his opinion that you should as well. Without hesitation, you told him that the idea was ridiculous, but he pressed you harder telling you that because he had already joined, you needed to sign up. DeLeon continued by stating that he could not believe that you would pull this on him after Monday night when he wanted to watch football, but he allowed you to watch your show instead. You replied that he kept 'flipping back to the game', however DeLeon reminded you that he had only wanted to see the score.
After making a quick jump shot, DeLeon wondered aloud what you had to do that was so important that you could not join a cult with him. At which point you told him that you were going to go sunbathing. Visibly shocked, DeLeon replied that going sunbathing was a 'bad idea' because Russell, the so-called 'leader guy' of the cult said the sun was bad because the 'beast' can't come out due to the bright light that apparently hurts his eyes 'or something'. He continued by warning that if you showed up to the cult all sunburned that [Russell] was going to be 'pissed at both of us'. Despite this assertion, you wasted no time in reminding DeLeon that you were not actually in the cult and that you need not be concerned about 'pissing the leader guy off'.
Undeterred, DeLeon told you that he was starting to believe in some of the stuff the cult guy had been saying and it seemed to make a lot of sense. You told him that you were happy for him, but that you were still not convinced. Additionally, you reassured DeLeon that the two of you could still hang out, but that you just wouldn't be in the cult with him. Unfortunately, as you found out just then DeLeon would have very little time to spend with you because he was going to be very busy with cult activities. The weekends in particular were going to be the busiest due to the heavy recruiting efforts that took place at local flea markets and malls.
Growing more frustrated, you asked DeLeon what the hurry was with joining this religious cult in the first place and his true motives became clear: There was a girl in the cult he wanted to meet. You asked him if the girl might have a friend for you and DeLeon said that if she didn't then the group would most certainly go out and recruit one for you. This enticement got you to start considering the idea more seriously. DeLeon even sweetened the deal by telling you that you really didn't have to believe all the stuff the cult guy said and that clothing, food and a free haircut would all be provided. You hesitated at the thought of some kind of 'weird haircut', but DeLeon reassured you that it would be a normal haircut and that you were going in saving twelve bucks.
After a few moments, you decided that you might go through with joining the cult, but that you had to visit your father in Florida within the next three weeks. If after that time you joined and didn't like it, you told DeLeon that you were going to escape.
